Let me start out by saying that I had the pleasure of having Mike on my podcast before the release of the book Hard Justice. To hear him talk of the work before I had read it was a treat. It had me set up for something special. I have read his work before with GOTU and was completely absorbed in the world of Robin Marlette. Would this western novel have the same effect?Yes and then some.
First Mike’s style of writing makes reading the story a pleasure. He handles action like a true master. You feel every bullet wiz by and every punch thrown. Also, Mike describes the scenes without a lot of boring dialogue or description. This is one of my gripes with some authors who feel the need to take pages and pages to tell you what they saw. The action gets lost and the reader gets bored. Mike ties the two together and lets you use your imagination to fill in the blanks.
Hard Justice is what the title suggests. It is a no punches pulled view of what justice was like in the early years of the west. It is not a children’s book and you won’t find your TV view of life in the west. It is clear to me that Mike did his research to present a hard hitting, hard talking and true representation of man’s struggle to tame the untamable. I was particularly impressed with how the American Indian was portrayed. In this case simply known as the clan.
I highly recommend this book. The story is the fantastic tale of Jasper Lee’s struggle to get revenge for his murdered pa, two brothers and a young girl. It may start out a revenge seeking tale, but in the end Jasper must choose justice over anger. The result is a truly emotional struggle for Jasper, his family and newly found friends.

This tale is flat, predictable and undeveloped. It would make a great comic book. How does this stuff get published?
It was ok for quick entertainment, but not a book that I would recommend .
Awesome book kept my attention throughout the book! I'm waiting for his next book to come out so I can get it as well!
I really enjoyed this story because of its realistic portrayal of the old west as it was before television and movies redefined it. The characters and their actions were "real" and the story line believable. Mike McNeff is a quickly maturing author...I am looking forward to his next book with great expectation.
A good read.
McNeff's portrayal of Jasper Lee, his commitment to justice and the love for his family, made for a very pleasurable read. McNeff doesn't pull any punches. In the days of the Old West, when heinous crimes were committed, the perpetrators were located and justice and retribution was meted out swiftly and surely. If you're looking for a novel, to take you back to a place where justice meant "an eye for an eye", then Hard Justice is an excellent read to do that with.
There are so many elements to Jasper Lee's story... In the old west Cowboys, tracking outlaws, gun fighting, Native Americans... The story comes to life and moves at a fast and yet calm pace.
This is a story about how good people, men and women, work together to conquer corruptions, stop atrocities and resolve judgmental social issues, while attempting to ensure justice was achieved. As far as justice goes There was a great deal of honesty, rather than "Me good guy - you bad guy - so you gonna die," like you read in a lot of "revenge" stories. And with that said, I very much enjoyed the shootouts!!! They were cool!!! -D
The story tells of sexual assaults and torture. But not in a gratuitous way! None of the violent scenes are gratuitous.
The love of family, community, truth and justice. I very much loved this story!!! It is my favorite from Mike McNeff, so far.
