The Seeds of Derbe is a multilayered story set in the 1st century Galatian town of Derbe (modern-day Central Turkey). In the midst of the Apostle Paul's first missionary journey, he and his companion Barnabas reach the town of Derbe after an unsuccessful and ultimately life-threatening stay in the town of Lystra. Drawing on the Biblical Book of Acts, Chapter 14, verses 19-21, Paul's establishment of the Church in Derbe is the center of a tale involving mystery, murder and the influence of an ancient cult.

This is a great first book by a very promising author. If you like historically accurate mysteries, read this. Then read The Thera Judgement.

The Seeds of Derbe The Missionary Journeys EJ Kaye 9781453831861 Books Reviews

First-century A.D. The prosperous city of Derbe guards its edge of the Roman Empire. It's in Derbe that commerce entering the province must pay customs dues for access to other destinations, especially Rome. It's to Derbe that once-imperial dreams return unfulfilled. Yet it's to Derbe the Apostle Paul flees after surviving a stoning in Lystra.

Almost upon arrival, Paul stumbles into the midst of a brewing storm. His message of reconciliation will pit a resolute synagogue leader against a banished Roman officer, and a ruthless cult priestess against a doctor investigating mysterious deaths. Along the way, seeds of doubt and seeds of faith take root and grow.

Disclosure I know the author personally. In The Seeds of Derbe, Kaye offers a well-woven plot based on widespread religious conflict, the universal backdrop to first-century life in the Middle East. It's a context likely foreign to many modern American readers; but authentic details based on impressive research make it easier to penetrate. Have you ever wondered what the "locals" (Jews and Gentiles of the day) thought of Christ's life and death? You'll get realistic perspectives in this story.

It's been a while since I've read a Christian fiction novel that presented Christ as Savior with so much...strength...as this one does. I was grateful for the absence of the (what I call) "sappy emotionalism" or the apologetic "kid-glovism" rampant in so many gospel-oriented novels. In Seeds, it's just the truth - told unvarnished, with simplicity and grace.

Seeds is sturdy storytelling from a self-described `developing author.' So it's fair to point out tendencies that may offer opportunities for development. A lot of the language felt self-conscious. Some exposition seemed awkward. Now and then, I felt the author "told me more than showed me." At times, I wanted more texture to a scene, but more mystery to a character's motives. However, the author seemed to gain more confidence as the story progressed, since the narrative felt more genuine with each successive chapter. As for the climax it wasn't so much of a surprise as it was a triumph of truth and character. I cheered.

Easily overcoming such minor bumps, The Seeds of Derbe satisfied this reader's first-century-Christian-fiction-hungry soul. Buy it.
