When Jane decides to give up her Wall Street position to follow her husband to Japan, she expects to surf Tokyo’s financial tsunami and launch herself on an international career. However, she unwittingly places herself on a trajectory that will challenge her marriage, her career, her assumptions about success and risks her very life. Hers is an emotional journey of love and betrayal, of hope and disillusionment, of trust and duplicity. As her expectations collide with reality, Jane discovers the brutal secrets of a Japanese family.
Thrown back on herself, Jane observes Japanese life. Unable to read, hear or speak, she struggles to understand and make sense of her new world. She perceives, then discards, the delusions that had filtered her perceptions. At the exact moment she thinks she has achieved insight, she is forced to face herself in the most dire circumstances. From the depths of despair Jane is able to transform and renew herself.
Complex and unexpected plot twists engage the reader’s attention as the finely crafted writing evokes the time and place of Tokyo in 1987. Bitter Tea is an elegant character driven portrait of desire caught in the vortex of financial manipulation and enduring wartime conflicts.
“The anomie of the ex-pat-in-Japan is captured in ‘Lost in Translation’ and in this book.” James Fallows, national correspondent, The Atlantic
“More twists and turns than a Tokyo alley!” Mary Lord, former Tokyo bureau chief for U.S. News & World Report

Bitter Tea edition by Louise T Gantress Literature Fiction eBooks

First, I must state that I'm somewhat biased - I know the author. But this is honestly a good, well-crafted book. It tells the story of Jane, an expatriate American living in Tokyo with her husband in the 1990s. A careerwoman, Jane struggles to find a place for herself in this alien culture. I loved the details such as Jane's frustration at not even being able to read road signs, and her going into a building by the wrong door. Jane, bright and perceptive, is aware that there are undercurrents she is not understanding fully. What she doesn't know is that these undercurrents, and the people who are causing them, will threaten her husband's life - and her own. "Bitter Tea" would appeal to readers who like stories of other cultures, to readers who enjoy strong female leads, and to mystery lovers. I would like a sequel about the two detectives in this book!

Bitter Tea edition by Louise T Gantress Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Bitter Tea offers such an amazing story of life as an American ex-pat in Japan. Gantress sweeps you up in her story and opens your eyes to another world. It is a great short read. I couldn't put it down until the gut wrenching end.
It reads very smoothly, has lots of adventure and mystery. The story keeps you guessing and engaged. I just about read it in one sitting rather than put it down.
I found Bitter Tea to be suspenseful, a great read. It transported me into the nationalistic--and at times murderous--shadow world of Tokyo during the 1980s when Japan's economic might seemed unstoppable and its investors snapped up frightening amounts of New York real estate. With wit and an eye for vivid details about Japanese mores and culture, Miss Gantress has written an original first novel.
It doesn't take long before the reader hates one character and totally sympathizes with another. I changed my mind about regretting not having the opportunity to work in Japan after reading this book. That's how well the author paints a verbal picture. A good, fast read with lots of insight into the culture.
After reading this book, you will want to visit Tokyo and experience life and living in this beautiful country. This book is about an American couple who worked on Wall Street in Manhatten and then transfer to Tokyo. What obstacles they run into opened my eyes as to what life is like in Tokyo for an ex pat. This book is very informative. The Japanese really do have a different way of looking at life and sometimes the way they react to situations both in the workplace and in their personal lives is sometimes quite different from the American way of life. It is a beautiful country and I am sure a wonderful place to visit.
Bitter Tea by Louise Gantress is an enthralling novel on many different levels. The most obvious is her difficulties and loneliness of her heroine, Jane, in dealing with the Japanese culture in which she is submerged, without the support of her husband and how she makes her way as best she can, while dealing with a failing marriage and new insights into who she has been and who she is she emerging as a person. There is both mystery and murder as well as new love. A very engrossing read which I could not put down! I highly recommend it as entertainment and something more psychologically!!! Lucille Barish LCSW
Based on the author's first-hand experiences working on Wall Street and in Japan, this well-crafted novel offers a fascinating peek at Japanese mores and methods of operation. It can be read on more than one level a murder mystery, the slow disintegration of a marriage, corporate sleaziness in Japan and in American finance, a consular staff that interprets its mission as buttering up the host country rather than helping American citizens, and the personal growth of its woman protagonist. The writing is infused with a dry wit and penetrating observations that kept this reader hooked.
